X,Y & Z: Rapid prototyping strategies for the contemporary artist
sculpture, sculpture, rapid prototyping, public art, Computer Aided Design, fabrication, Computer Numeric Control
This planning grant will give me time to refine my skills using the computer to design large-scale sculpture for fabrication by third parties. This will facilitate my ongoing aspirations of participation in competitions for commissioned public sculpture opportunities. Once I have integrated these methods into my artistic practice I will use the methods to provide students with opportunities for CAD sculpture courses. In this phase I will review and test CNC (Computer-Numeric-Control) and CAD (Computer-Aided-Design) software. Such programs guide fabrication machines-such as laser cutting, routers, and massive stone millers. Each locates the cutting-head in space by X,Y, & Z coordinates.
