We plan to use this grant to explore collaboratively the visual techniques of landscape art, especially landscape painting, combining our experience in various media and various aspects of scholarly and creative work. Each of us brings a different form of expertise in landscape: Scott Hess as a scholar of landscape representation in historical and cultural context; Mark van Buskirk as a painter whose work includes landscape; and Walt Bistline as a photographer who has produced a significant amount of his work in landscape photography. We plan to meet together for three weeks to pool our expertise and explore the techniques of visual landscape, including visits to various regional art collections. In order to add an experiential direction to our exploration, we will also plan and execute two original artworks of our own during the period of the grant - a landscape oil painting and a photograph - imitating the styles of great landscape artists. The grant will add new directions to all three of our work, allowing Scott to do new scholarship in the field of visual landscape art, enhancing Mark and Walt's creative work, and adding new dimensions to all of our teaching.
