The primary reason I seek support from the New Directions Initiative is to undertake a project about which I'm passionate, but lack the requisite background. If this proposal were considered meritorious, I would have the support to embark on the publication of a book entitled ‘Thin Slicing.' In the course of our daily lives, we're required to answer a variety of important questions about others based on limited information. Of the thousands of people I meet over my lifetime, to whom shall I choose to commit? Is my coworker lying to me? For whom shall I vote to lead my city, state, and country? We are constantly forming impressions of others and making evaluative judgments about them, most often without conscious awareness. These judgments form the basis for some very important decisions in our personal lives, as well as our society at large. ‘Thin Slicing' – the working title of my book - is about how we answer fundamental questions in our social lives and in larger society based on small samples of peoples' behavior. With the support of the New Directions Initiative, I will immerse myself in the literature related to the content of the book, draft a book proposal, and write a sample chapter. This project covers new territory for me professionally in that I will be reading and synthesizing a literature that is unrelated to my current area of expertise. Moreover, I will develop a mode of communication to a wider audience rather than scholars in the field. For reasons I discuss in the proposal, I'm confident that the scope and feasibility of the proposed objectives are realistic within the time parameters of the proposal.
