language immersion, Hebrew, Jewish American poetry, Israeli poetry, traditional Jewish liturgy
Ohio Wesleyan University
The GLCA New Directions Initiative awards will allow David Caplan to study Hebrew at Hebrew University's summer ulpan (language institute). An associate professor of English at Ohio Wesleyan University and the author of two books about poetry and one poetry collection, Caplan seeks to expand his knowledge of Hebrew in order to study the connections that contemporary Jewish American poetry shares with traditional Jewish liturgy and contemporary Israeli poetry. He also plans to write poetry about his experiences in Jerusalem.
