This proposal requests support to complete a pilot project designed to both move my research into a new area (structural geology) and to initiate an international collaboration involving faculty and students from the United States, Sweden, and Germany. The pilot project involves geological mapping, structural analysis and a study of metamorphic mineral assemblages and chemistries from the area in and around Stensjostrand Naturreservat, Halland Province, Sweden. In order to complete the project, I will spend 26 days in Sweden doing field work with three Hope College undergraduate research students as well as students and faculty from Lund, University Sweden. The rest of the summer will be spent creating the final version of a geological map and preparing two papers to be submitted to scientific journals. This will provide the background data and the record of publications needed to write a competitive grant proposal to the National Science Foundation's International Research Experiences for Students program.
