The goal of my project is to move from the intellectual to the physical and tangible in not only thinking about but producing things of beauty as my own aesthetic response to the ugliness of world politics. In my professional work I am compelled to daily confront horrible phenomena like war, genocide, and crimes against humanity. This project is a 180 degree shift in emphasis, in both content and skill set. My goal in this project is to learn the artistic skills and techniques that I can use to transform weapons and remnants of weapons into functional, beautiful objects and tools. In this project, I will work under the guidance of accomplished metal smith, Assistant Professor SungYeoul Lee. I believe that the experience of doing something completely outside the realm of my professional skill set (e. g. the new skills of sawing, sanding, annealing, hammering, grinding, gilding) will lead to new practicable insights as to what it means to forge an idea and to teach in ways that empower students to change the world around them.
