I propose to take a two-week intensive summer study course in Greece in June, 2011. As a classicist, I have spent time in Greece, which has led, in combination with informal study of modern Greek, to an intermediate competency. A recent research project in comparative literature required me to read extensively in modern Greek. I would like to pursue this new path of scholarship, and capitalize on the knowledge of modern Greek I have acquired over the years, by taking an intensive course in Greece, in order to achieve real fluency in the language. This new competency will open a host of opportunities for sharing work on Greek culture, ancient and modern, with scholars in many countries, in addition to Greece.
