Mathematical and statistical approaches are increasingly important in biology, and my recent work has required me to use more complex statistical approaches. Thus, I seek funding to develop new skills in mathematical biology and to begin applying them to specific research questions that my lab is currently pursuing. I am specifically seeking to learn the R programming language, a widely used and extremely powerful tool that can be used for a variety of statistical and modeling purposes. I will apply R to address two issues that have arisen in my lab. First, I plan to use R to assess the sources of variability in real-time PCR experiments. Second, I plan to apply curve-fitting procedures to evaluate properties of a calcium binding protein. The skills I develop will be widely useful to future questions in my research lab and will also have curricular benefits. I request funding for summer time to learn the R language and supply money to produce the physiological data to be analyzed by these techniques.
