This Singular Exploration grant will fund four weeks of intensive writing on a new book project and attendance at a creative non-fiction writing course at the Glen Workshop held on the St. Johns College Santa Fe campus. This will facilitate moving from using literary narratives as I have in the past - mainly as thought-experiments in service of the clarification of ethical concepts - toward producing publishable creative writing that grapples with perennial human questions. The book's theme will be rooted in an interdisciplinary course that I have taught for many years: Saints, Heroes and Ordinary People. This book will examine the question "What makes a life 'good enough' and worth living?" With the help of this NDI grant, the book will be an excellent example of exploring perennial human questions through creative nonfiction. This project will allow me to reenter full time teaching and scholarship with renewed vigor, after spending two years as an interim dean.
