Red Weather is an in-progress novel focused on modern Native American history and politics. The novel takes as its starting point an important chapter in Native American history, which has thus far received almost no treatment by literary writers, the sterilization of Native women in Bureau of Indian Affair hospitals. Support is provided for four weeks over the summer of 2010 to do additional research on the modern history of American Indian activism necessary to complete revisions of this first novel. My career has centered on writing and teaching poetry; the researching and writing of a novel is a very new direction for me. The process of combining the research results with revisions will provide additional insights into the Native American experience in the U.S.
