I plan to learn the methodology and literature of new subject areas and disciplines (history of the book and publishing history) so that I will be able to pursue research on the modern Japanese publishing industry and its impact on cultural production. Based on this retooling, along with archival research and interviews in Japan, I plan to write three articles and possibly a monograph on progressive and Leftist Japanese publishers in the 20th century. Study in these subject areas will also enhance my teaching of Japanese literature and also allow me to contribute to the Book Studies curriculum at Oberlin.
