On the Trail of the Cold War: Biking the Iron Curtain Trail with Teachers from East and West
travel narrative, Cold War, Eastern Bloc, Iron Curtain Trail, bicycle tour, Cold War, oral history, living history
As the former Iron Curtain becomes a bike path through Europe, I plan to ride along significant lengths of it in the company of school and university teachers from Eastern and Western Europe as we talk about how the Cold War has affected our lives. The Iron Curtain Trail is a living history project, an effort to transform the barrier that divided people into an active fitness park that unites them. This New Directions Grant funds the first exploratory phase of a multi-year oral history and travel writing project, with the eventual goal of producing a book to be published on the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain in 2014. The product of this initial phase of the project will be an article for a trade magazine.
