I am ready to embark on something I have never attempted before; a completely new series of large-scale sculpture as a way to explore the relationships between the micro-and macrocosmic in the natural world. To do so, I need to be able to dedicate a substantial amount of time to the research and development of the conceptual framework and practical production of this work. I plan to create a series of ca. 5-7' high sculptures that will be an exploration of the interconnectedness of individual components within the matrix of a larger collective. Each sculpture will be constructed by attaching numerous minuscule clay components to one another in sections; each section will then be attached to another section, and so on to complete the sculptural form. I envision this series of large sculptures evolving and mutating collectively into an oversized garden: a topiary-like installation, once the objects are fully realized. This work will be entirely new in method, content and form. I am seeking funding for the summer/fall of 2012, specifically for three research trips. The proposed project is to develop more fully the ideas behind the new work and to allow them to coalesce into a productive strategy and program before I take up an artist's residency at the Zentrum für Keramik-Berlin for the spring/summer of 2013 to complete this body of work and present it in a solo exhibition there. By the end of this project and the following residency, I anticipate having executed an entirely new body of work that will take my art in a new direction, push me into new artistic and intellectual territory, and will culminate not only in a solo exhibition in Berlin, but also other exhibitions after that.
