This proposal is for a GLCA New Directions Initiative grant to underwrite the cost of registration for up to ten GLCA communication faculty to attend the 2012 National Communication Association Institute for Faculty Development, to be held at Hope College, 2012-2016 ($500 per person; total = $5000). Our goal with this grant is to promote participation by GLCA faculty who have not traditionally attended the conference, especially in its two most recent locations (Virginia and Iowa). It is a timely proposal since the conference is in the "GLCA's backyard" for the next five years. By giving an incentive to attend the first year, participants are likely to share their experience with colleagues and continue support of the Institute in subsequent years. One of the purposes of the Institute is to explore new subject matter and new research which can translate into new teaching methodologies and scholarship. This is especially valuable for mid-career faculty who teach in undergraduate communication programs, as our discipline is being redefined by several major forces including computer-mediated communication and globalization. We want to attract mid-career faculty to this conference who are interested in and can deal with change, and who are likely to be change agents in their departments.
