I propose to explore improvisational comedy as a new career direction. My plan is to take a sequence of intensive improvisation courses at the Second City Training Center in Chicago. There are four courses in the sequence and each course meets for three hours every day for five days. I would attend courses during Sessions 5 – 8, from July 9th to August 3rd, 2012. I currently teach creative writing and literature courses at Kalamazoo College. In recent years, my scholarly work has focused on fiction writing. Learning improvisational techniques would give me my first formal exposure to theatre and would also give me practice in an exciting and (for me) new form of collaborative storytelling. Taking these courses at Second City would also help me explore a career path I've long thought about but haven’t been able to train myself in while living and teaching in Kalamazoo.
