My GLCA New Directions Initiative proposal involves a radically different research area and change in direction in my discipline. For 20 years, I have identified myself as a Costume Designer, but have long been interested in branching out to creating theatre through interviews and story gathering. Combined with my new direction in the study of French language and culture, I have designed a project that brings together my new interests and gives me the skills to continue my research and teaching in this area for the second part of my career. I will learn the research methods and acquire the skills for conducting ethnographies in the summer prior to my sabbatical in the fall of 2011. I will conduct research, ethnographies, and story collecting in France by gathering the stories and family histories of families who have had members immigrate to the United States and with expatriate Americans who are now living in France. I will attend a language immersion program that will enable me to compliment my two years of college level language study so that I have the ability to communicate with the French people chosen for my interviews. This research will then be organized and dissected using the methods of documentary theatre and devised theatre to create a piece of theatre to share on my campus and perhaps to a wider audience.
