I am requesting a grant from the GLCA's New Directions Initiative "Broadening Intellectual Perspectives" to re-educate myself for the transition from being a professor of 15 years in Physical Education and Health Pedagogy to an administrative position as Director of Campus Wellness. In the spring of 2010, Albion College's President asked me to accept the newly-formed position. Teaching students how to become high-quality teachers is completely different from being a director of a fledgling program. I realized that I had a much bigger job on my hands: I have to reeducate myself not only in the field of wellness, but also in the design and management of the new program, an evaluation plan, a budget, purchasing equipment, training a staff to run the program, etc. Thus, I must reinvent myself for my new position. At the same time I recognized how complicated the issue of campus wellness is and how important it is to both learning and productivity. Plato was right; there is a strong connection between a strong body and a strong mind. I will accomplish the task of re-educating myself by visiting high-quality wellness programs around the GLCA, the U.S. and in Canada, meeting with successful deans and directors, and attending conferences, seminars and workshops that focus on the administrative needs addressed above. This will allow me to gain the intellectual and academic knowledge to begin this new career. I will begin this process directly after commencement at the beginning of May 2011.
