I will use the GLCA New Directions Initiative Grant to complete reading, research and writing for a new project titled "For God, Country and Womanhood: Protestant and Catholic Women in World War I America." I will compare the local work of the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) and the Women’s Committee of the National Catholic War Council (NCWC) during and after World War I. This new focus in my research entails mastery of a new kind of source base. In particular, I will examine personal experience narratives of the women active in these organization. During the grant tenure, I will complete archival research, read recent historical scholarship that can provide models for narrative analysis, and do writing exercises incorporating these new sources and methodologies.
