I request New Directions Initiative funding in the summer of 2013 to provide me uninterrupted time to research, write, and submit for publication two scholarly articles in the burgeoning field of "film as philosophy." Support for broadening my intellectual horizons will enable me to generate and disseminate the ideas formulated over the past year in collaboration with my colleague at Allegheny who works in film studies. I trust that the impact of my work in this new direction, given my "fresh eyes," will be felt in the field and further my own professional career as a philosopher navigating multiple interests. In the tradition of the teacher/scholar model cultivated at Allegheny College, I will also harness my scholarly work in this new direction to construct a permanent course in the philosophy curriculum titled "Film as Philosophy" to be offered initially in the fall of 2014. Pairing my teaching and scholarship in this way will lead to further scholarly publication in this field.
