The ultimate goal of this project is to prepare a draft textbook for a course in the spring of 2014 and eventually to be published in the 'Reacting to the Past' (RTTP) series. RTTP transforms a historical incident into a game that students play out so that through it they learn about relevant issues. Tentatively entitled 'Designing an RTTP Game: Dong Zhuo Dethrones the Emperor and the Mandate of Heaven,' this game centers around the year 189, when the warlord Dong Zhuo rose to power and wanted to dethrone the emperor. The game aims to introduce undergraduate students to the meaning and severity of the concept of 'Mandate of Heaven' in Confucian China. Taking the roles of warlords, court officials, the emperor, imperial in-laws, and eunuchs, students will be engaged in a dialogue based on Confucian thought from nearly two thousand years ago.
