Scientists and artists share a surprising amount of common ground. We both manipulate the material world in our respective searches for understanding. We both employ highly abstract conceptual maps in communicating our discoveries. And we both retain a child-like tendency to try things, just to see what happens! I propose to pursue several activities that will allow me to explore the synergies between scientific and artistic approaches to materials and processes such as digital imaging, glass working, and creating interactivity via the use of electronic sensors and actuators. These explorations will enhance my ability to develop and guide creative projects in courses including introductory astronomy and sophomore/junior electronics. They should also result in collaborations with arts faculty and students at Kenyon and, perhaps, beyond. The opportunity to engage in such an expansive, imaginative project would be, for me, a strikingly new and exciting direction for my professional development.
