This project consists firstly of participation in a felting, natural dyeing and pattern-making workshop in Guarda, Portugal. In this workshop I will learn additional material, some of which I had hoped to learn from my previous NDI-funded workshop in July 2012, but which was not sufficiently covered by the instructor. This workshop, taught by Nicola Brown at a sheep farm, the Dominio del Vale do Mondego in Guarda, Portugal, will allow further important study in natural dyeing and felting. I will work from a particularly high quality raw fleece which has great sculptural and wearable potential. of As a result of the 2012 felting workshop with Jorie Johnson, and another related workshop in natural dyeing, I have new questions about sculptural felting, pattern-making and naturally dyeing wool. The rest of the project is as follows: research at Le Musee du Feutre in Mouzon, France, and museums in Lyon, such as the Musees des Tissue et des Arts Decoratifs, Le Musee d'Art Contemporain and Le Musee du Chapeau. This research in museums will impressively extend my knowledge of feltmaking, dyeing and related textile arts, which is necessary for my artwork as well as teaching in my new direction in textiles, after a long career in craft as a metalsmith.
