I propose to live in South Africa for two months in the spring of 2014. While there, I will study the phonetics of Zulu and Xhosa so as to be able to perform, compose, and arrange African music more authentically using these languages, and to share this with North American choirs. I am also interested in the natural vocal production of native South Africans who are as yet unaffected by the pitch-altering and amplification technologies which have brought about such a decline in healthy singing in North America. I would return with several new compositions for my choirs to perform in subsequent seasons. I anticipate returning also with a desire to become involved in advocacy in our community; I would work with education majors and policy-makers to fight for more and better vocal music in our schools. I am requesting funding from a GLCA New Directions Initiatives grant to lay a foundation for this new area of scholarship.
